A Compendium
of Frequently Asked Questions
What is JSTAR?
JSTAR stands for Jewish Singles
Together Around the River.
How do I find out about
events?
Currently, we advertise
events through the website and a semi-regular email. In the past
we had a username/password system to view a calendar.
To be placed
on our mailing list, either send
us an email or call us with
the following information: Your first and last name, and either
your email address, regular address, or phone number.
How do I send you an email?
To send us an email,
click on the 'Feedback' link, type the above info in the body of
the email and use a subject line of 'Registration ID'. Or you can
send the email directly to JstarCinti@aol.com.
What do you do with my information?
JSTAR requires contact
information so that we have some way of reaching you with information
about events, changes to our website, and occasional changes in
policy, if needed. Any information you provide us is confidential
and for JSTAR internal use only. We will not sell, share or give
your information to any third party.
Is there a fee?
There is no fee for
belonging to JSTAR, however it is a membership organization.
You will become a member when you join the email list. The
benefit of membership is the right to receive emails which list
current and future events. JSTAR reserves the the right to
remove a person from the mailing list and to revoke a person's membership
for any reason and at any time.
How much do events cost?
We try to plan inexpensive,
fun events. You are responsible for all costs for attending an event.
This means that if we go the movies, you pay for your own ticket,
or if we go to brunch, you cover your own food. We will not charge
a fee just for atttending a JStar event, unless we explicitly state
this in advance. If there are fees for an event, rafting for example,
we will let you know the cost in advance. Unfortunately, we cannot
provide subsidies sincewe have no money for a budget.
Who sponsors JSTAR?
We are not sponsored
by anyone. Our goal is to provide genuinely fun social
opportunities for Jewish Singles from across the Jewish Community
(Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Secular, Unaffiliated). Our
Independence allows us to stage events that we might not otherwise
be able to provide, and to provide a large enough variety of events
that any given person will find at least some of them appealing.
What age range is JSTAR oriented
towards - am I too old or too young?
JSTAR events are open
to individuals in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. We sponsor a variety
of events. Because not every event will appeal to everyone
in every age range, some events may attract more people in one age
range than another. We do not restrict events to sub age groups
(i.e. 20s only events, 40s only events).
I noticed that a few of your
events are marked Kosher or Vegetarian. What's that all about?
Certain events are marked
*V, *K, or *S. *S means that the event begins on a Saturday
night after Shabbat. *V means that at least one vegetarian/dairy
food choice is available. *K means that all food available
is Kosher according Vaad/OU/StarK standards.
We
recognize that some of our members are very strict about Kosher
dietary laws, while others pay no attention to the dietary laws.
Because JSTAR spans the entire
Jewish community, we have to make certain accommodations in dealing
with food at events. At events not under supervision, we cannot
make any guarantees about the Kashrut/Vegetarian nature of the food,
and it is up to each individual to make a reasoned and adult choice
about their comfort level in attending that particular event, and
in the food choices they make at the event. In other words,
if we meet for a Reds ballgame, it's up to you to decide whether
to get peanuts, a hot dog, or nothing with your Coke.
I have an idea for a REALLY
great event. Will you do it?
We are always interested
in new event ideas. While we cannot guarantee that we will
do it, please send us suggestions by email or call us. If
you send an email, the subject line should read 'JSTAR Event Idea'.
I want to sponsor/open up
an event to the people in JSTAR. Who do I talk to?
Call us, or email us
with the subject line 'JSTAR Event Cosponsor Idea'. While
we cannot guarantee it will make the calendar, we will at least
consider any idea.
Who is this mysterious 'we'
you keep talking about, and can I be a part of it?
'We' are the organizing
committee, a group of people who decide, plan, organize, and execute
events. If you are interested in helping us, call us or send
us an email with the subject line 'JSTAR, I want to help you organize!'.
JSTAR events are too religious
/ not religious enough for me - how come you can't get it just right?
Because we span the
entire Jewish community, we try to provide a variety of events.
While we cannot make every event appeal to everyone, we hope the
variety is sufficient that everyone will find some events appealing.
If you feel we aren't hitting the mark, send us some ideas - while
we cannot guarantee we will do them, we will seriously consider
every idea. See "I have an Idea for a really great event"
for details.
I, or my organization, would
like to contribute money/time/effort to JSTAR. How do I go about it?
JSTAR
gladly accepts time/money/effort/material donations, and we will
acknowledge your donation on the 'Kudos' page. However,
we do not accept formal sponsorship by Synagogues/Shuls/Temples,
religious movements or other organizations. To make a donation,
please contact us by phone, or send an email with the subject line
'JSTAR - I want to Donate!'.
I am having problems viewing the site.
Can you help me?
We can provide limited help to resolve technical
problems you may have trying to view the website. Our support is
provided by volunteers. Please send an email with the subject line
'JSTAR - I need technical support'.
Important notice regarding liability.
JStar, JStar's planning committee, and any of its
members, singly or as a group, cannot be held responsible or liable
for any injury, monetary, physical or otherwise, of any type, that
you may incur while at one of our events, or because of attending
one of our events. By attending an event, as a member or otherwise,
you agree that you understand and are bound by this paragraph.
